Better Dead, (Hardcover)

"Better Dead" is a sharp-witted satirical novella that marks the literary debut of J.M. Barrie. This darkly comedic work follows the journey of Andrew Riach, an ambitious young Scotsman who travels to London with high hopes of carving out a successful career. However, after facing a series of professional disappointments and finding the city overpopulated with mediocrity, Andrew discovers a peculiar organization known as the Society for Doing Without Some People (S.D.W.S.P.).

The story explores the absurd premise of a society dedicated to the assassination of prominent public figures whose removal would, theoretically, benefit the world at large. As Andrew becomes embroiled in the group's activities, Barrie skewers the social and political landscape of the late 19th century with biting irony and wit. Far from the whimsical fantasy of his later works like "Peter Pan", "Better Dead" reveals a more cynical and provocative side of Barrie's imagination. This work remains a fascinating example of early psychological satire, offering a unique look at the author's development and the cultural anxieties of his time. Readers will find a compelling blend of macabre humor and astute social commentary within its pages.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
